Some Darn Expensive Shoes!

At my Occupational Therapy appointment today, E and Mommy decided it was time to discuss shoes since I'm standing so much. It is best if I start wearing shoes full-time because I have weak ankles which is making me lock my legs. This is what is preventing me from walking or standing for longer periods of time. So I have to get some shoes (that I'll keep on) and then put orthodics in them. Except the orthodics are EXPENSIVE. They have to be made just for me and wouldn't ya know, insurance probably does not cover it. That means Mommy and Daddy are looking at an $80 orthodic plus they have to find a shoe that will fit it...meaning another $25 or so. Total, we are looking at over $100 for my shoes. Ouch.

Mommy also found out that one avenue that people normally take for these is no longer available...called Payer of Last Resort. This is normally available for people when insurance doesn't cover items but in the recent months, this fund has run really low and so many people need this item that it has just become too expensive for them to cover anymore.

This means Mommy is going to start the dreaded process of filing for Medicaid for me. She isn't looking forward to it. She looked into it a little bit last year but we fall into that middle-income nightmare. Parents of kiddos with special needs know exactly what I'm talking about. But it's time that Mommy faces the task...given that these orthodics will only last until I grow out of them and then I'll need a new pair. Also, my glasses also cost $$ and let's face it, I'm not the gentlest kid with them. In fact, I'd love nothing better than to dismantle those things in two seconds flat.

Other costs are starting to show up too. For example, my insurance only covers so much $$ for my therapy appointments. And wouldn't ya know, every trip to see my favorite OT is $130 for one hour. We go to OT every other week. My school (which is really a special needs therapy playgroup) is every week. My speech therapy is every other week....and this list goes on. All of which cost some serious bucks. And our funds are almost out.

So a new adventure begins...wish Mommy luck. Those are some expensive shoes!
